We started day three by heading to Versailles. Fun fact – We almost didn’t go to Versailles; in fact, I had called the night before asking if we could cancel and get a refund because when we checked the price on Uber, it was saying like $100 each way! Normally you would just hop on the metro, however with the strikes that wasn’t an option. We said we would check the price in the morning and if it was cheaper then we would go, which it ended up being. We left super early since we had been running late for pretty much everything due to traffic and arrived with plenty of time to spare! The drive from Paris to Versailles took about 40 minutes.
We decided to take a guided tour of Versailles, because we knew nothing about it and thought it would be beneficial to have someone explain everything to us. Our tour guide was great and did a good job of keeping the tour moving, giving us enough history, without being boring. I will say it felt pretty crowded at times and the crowds were down due to the strikes, so I can’t imagine being there on a normal day. The entire grounds were beautiful and it’s so crazy to think that people actually lived there!
It rained pretty hard this day so the weather was not the best for exploring the gardens. I definitely think visiting Versailles in the spring/summer would be ideal! Overall, I think it was something you should definitely see once, but I don’t feel the need to go back again.
We left Versailles and headed back to our hotel to change and grab some lunch. We randomly found Cafe dei Fratelli & ordered pizza and a charcuterie board. Both were delicious!
For dinner, we had made reservations (through Facebook) at Le Refuge des Fondus, which was recommended by multiple people. It’s a fondue restaurant where you get two options – either meat or cheese fondue and either red or white wine. HOWEVER, they serve you the wine in baby bottles! The reason for this is that the restaurant is so small that you actually have to jump over the table in order to sit down on the one side. SO to avoid spilling any wine, they decided to serve it in baby bottles. We chose the meat fondue and it was soooo good! It comes with potatoes and they give you a bunch of different sauces, olives, pickles & cheese to eat with it.
After dinner, we walked over to Moulin Rouge, which is located in the red light district. We pre-purchased our tickets through Viator, and chose to do the show only option since we already had dinner plans. There is an option to have dinner there before the show if you prefer. It’s important to know that you do not get to pick your seat for the show. When you arrive, you are taken to your seats, which are random, and you will be sitting at a table with other people. Our table had six people total, and we were lucky to get some pretty cool people! It was fun chatting with them before the show began. Also important to know, is that the seating in the theater is TIGHT! If you don’t like small spaces, or crowds than I don’t recommend this show. They definitely pack in as many people as possible. I’ve heard conflicting opinions regarding the show, but overall we thought the show was really good and better than we had expected. The women are topless, but it’s not weird or too much like I’ve heard regarding other cabaret shows. After the show, we headed back to the hotel to catch some sleep before our last day in Paris!
