Day four was all about fitting in everything we had left to do before heading back home. We covered A LOT of ground this day – and everything was not entirely planned out like the first three days of our trip. The first thing we did was head to the Palais-Royal to take some pictures. You’ve probably seen pictures of this area before; it has all different size black & white striped pillars. Luckily for us, when we arrived it was practically empty so getting some good pictures was easy!
Afterwards we walked around until we found a spot to grab some breakfast. Would you believe this was our first time eating breakfast in Paris!? We were always so busy in the mornings that we never had time to grab breakfast! This place offered a standard breakfast with espresso, orange juice, a croissant & a piece of pound cake.
We then headed back to the hotel to change before exploring more. The next place on my list was seeing the Christmas tree at the Galeries Lafayette. The Galeries Lafayette is actually a department store in Paris, made up of several buildings. The tree is located in the Haussmann building, and each year it has a different theme. The theme for 2019 was Christmas beehive. A glass walkway is available so you can walk out and snap a picture in front of the tree, but you will have to wait in a line to do so. Luckily, the line wasn’t that long! The department store also has an ice skating rink on the roof, if you have time to check it out!
Next, we got an Uber and headed to the Eiffel Tower! This is the only thing I did not buy tickets to in advance and I’m very happy I did not. The Eiffel Tower has two options, with two different price points. You can choose to go to the second floor, or you can choose to go all the way to the top. HOWEVER, if for some reason the top floor is closed (like it was for us on this day due to high winds) and you already have tickets to the top, you don’t get a refund. We waited in line for around 30 minutes to get tickets to the second floor. You can choose to take the stairs or the elevator up; we chose the elevator. I am not someone who is normally afraid of heights but I will say I felt a tad nervous being in that elevator going up the side of the Eiffel Tower! I was honestly happy the top was closed so we couldn’t go all the way up!! The second floor is still pretty high and provides amazing views! Instead of waiting in line for the elevator to go back down, we decided to take the stairs.
We had dinner reservations that night so we decided to head back to the hotel to get ready. We took the hour walk back, so that we could soak in the most of Paris before saying goodbye. I will say I did not care for the area around the Eiffel Tower. There were too many people selling things and trying to talk to us, obviously, because it’s the #1 tourist attraction in Paris. I was very happy we decided to not book a hotel in this area. On our walk back, we made a pit stop at LADURÉE Paris Champs Elysees to grab some macaroons! This store was super cute and even has a restaurant if you have time to eat there. We got six macaroons & had such a hard time choosing the flavors – everything looked so good!
After freshening up at the hotel, we headed to dinner. We had made reservations at Frenchie Rue de Nil ahead of time through their website. This is a Michelin star restaurant, so reservations at this restaurant are hard to get, but we were lucky to snag a spot. Frenchie is a six-course meal that has NO MENU; they simply serve whatever the chef decides to cook! You can tell them any special dietary restrictions and they will accommodate. The six-course meal consisted of an appetizer, a scallop cooked in the shell, chorizo gnocchi, fish with stuffed artichoke, PIGEON (with a side of fried pigeon), a coconut mint mousse, & chocolate cake. Everything we had was amazing!! For those wondering, I did try the pigeon and it was ok. The fried pigeon honestly just tasted like fried chicken! This was our most expensive meal – but you got a lot of food and the entire dinner was over two hours.
We left dinner and headed to the Arc de Triomphe. We had pre-purchased tickets and I thought it would be cool to see the view from the top at night. The Arc is located in the middle of the large traffic circle, so in order to get to the arc you need to walk underground. However, after making it all the way there the Arc was closed…probably due to the strikes. I will say I was impressed with the size of the Arc more than anything else in Paris. It is so big and I just couldn’t get over the size.
There was only one more thing left for us to do before calling it a night, and that was seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle one last time. We wandered around until 10pm, and watched the tower light up. Afterwards, we headed back to the hotel to pack and catch some rest before our early morning flight.
